Vulnerability and Resilience:
Adaptive Strategies and Global Change

Call for Panels and Papers

Social anthropology has a long experience with those who are vulnerable. A humanistic dimension of the discipline grew from the interaction with communities and persons who were excluded, stigmatized or just not heard enough. Today, the essence of such an anthropological position remains as social inequality has been threatening human lives and uncertainty lurks in the background. In the same time, anthropological knowledge contains a large amount of ethnographic data from different geographic and social environments showing the ability of humans in searching convenient solutions in difficult economic, social and political conditions. Human groups and communities, trying to avoid or to overcome hard times, have developed a mosaic of adaptive strategies showing the changing nature of the human resilience.

The modern history of Eastern Europe has been full of dynamic and dramatic events and processes permanently changing the basic conditions of life for different social/regional/ ethnic/confessional/professional/other communities. Those processes have been unprecedented and therefore vulnerability and resilience have gained specific social and cultural meanings. Various strategies have been initiated, adopted, and resisted in order to cope with dramatic changes.

Vulnerability is not a state of being but emerges in a complex web of ideas, practices and relations. A movement across the frontiers of power situates vulnerability in contextual hierarchies and sheds light on the ways it is negotiated, experienced and redefined. Social and cultural anthropology has been developed not only to define locally and globally embedded patterns of vulnerability but also describe and understand the variety of models and strategies of human adaptation and resilience. The conference welcomes contributions dealing with these perspectives in the context of ongoing global change.
