Dear Prof. Dr. Patrick Cramer,
The executive board of the Czech Association for Social Anthropology (CASA) would like to express a widespread concern among the members of our association regarding the sudden termination of Prof. Ghassan Hage’s contract at MPI of Social Anthropology in Halle. This decision was particularly surprising as we know that Prof. Hage’s tenure at MPI has so far been fruitful, creative, and highly appreciated by colleagues and students. We considered his presence a significant impetus for the further development of social anthropology in Central Eastern Europe.
The accusations leveled at Prof. Hage in a tabloid right-wing media, which accuses him as an anti-Semite, are outrageous and reprehensible. Anyone familiar with Prof. Hage’s academic work as well as his public interventions knows that his long-standing research interest is precisely to expose forms of racism, nationalism, and the critique of violence that accompanies them. His contributions in this area have had a transformative effect on social theory and the anthropological epistemic community.
We at the CASA firmly believe that academic institutions, and especially a centre that aspires to academic excellent such as MPI, should support and protect academic freedom. The idea of cultivating an environment of rigorous and critical debate suffers enormously when it succumbs to interference by people who have no intention of seeking understanding or deepening our knowledge. We also wish to express our endorsement for the statement issued by the Board of the German Association of Social and Cultural Anthropology on Academic Freedom in Germany. Like many scholars and colleagues from Germany, Israel, and other parts of the world, we strongly believe that we, as academics, should take additional measures to counter violent labeling, false accusations of anti-Semitism or racism, and persecution of dissenting voices. In these times of political polarization, it has become a common practice for dishonest public interventions to follow this pattern.
Participation in the networks, collaborations and events organized by the MPI for Social Anthropology in Halle has benefited many members of our association. Over the years, the Institute has been served as a hub of academic excellence where rigorous science and debate combine with respect for diverse opinions and courage in inquiry. We ask you not to put at risk this cherished character of your institution and urge you to reconsider your decision, revoke the contract termination and allow Prof. Hage to continue his work.

Česká asociace pro sociální antropologii (CASA) odsuzuje rozhodnutí nejvyšších představitelů Ruské federace vojensky napadnout Ukrajinu, suverénní stát v našem sousedství. S velkým smutkem a rozhořčením sledujeme toto flagrantní porušení mezinárodního práva a útok na svobodu a lidské životy ze strany režimu Vladimira Putina.
Vyjadřujeme solidaritu lidu Ukrajiny v jeho odhodlání rozhodovat o svých osudech a o svém státu nezávisle na imperiální moci a útlaku. Věříme, že reakce institucí České republiky ve věci pomoci Ukrajině bude rychlá a adekvátní, a to i z toho důvodu, že existence a chod našeho státu jsou v mnoha ohledech možné díky usilovné práci mnohých občanek a občanů Ukrajiny, kteří zde ale ne vždy měli rovné životní a pracovní podmínky. Současně podporujeme občanky a občany Ruské federace, včetně našich kolegyň a kolegů, kteří vyjadřují nesouhlas s ozbrojenou agresí a volají po jejím ukončení.

Чеська асоціація соціальної антропології (ЧАСА) засуджує рішення високопосадовців Росіїської Федерації атакувати Україну, суверенну, сусідню нам державу. З великим сумом і обуренням слідкуємо за цим безпрецедентним порушенням міжнародного права та посяганням на свободу та людські життя зі сторони режиму Володимира Путіна.
Висловлюємо солідарність з народом України в його прагненні вирішувати свою долю та долю своєї держави незалежно від імперської влади та гніту. Віримо, що реакція організацій Чеської республіки стостовно допомоги Україні буде швидка та адекватна, зокрема і тому, що існування та хід нашої країни з багатьох поглядів можливе завдяки пильній праці багатьох громадян на громадянок України, які не завжди тут мали рівні життєві умови та умови праці. У той же час ми підтримуємо громадян та громадянок Росіїської Федерації, включно наших колег, які висловлюють незгоду із озброєною агресією та закликають до її припинення.

Чешская ассоциация социальной антропологии (ЧАСА) осуждает решение высших должностных лиц Российской Федерации нанести военный удар по Украине, суверенному государству, находящемуся по соседству с нами. Мы с огромной печалью и возмущением наблюдаем за этим беспрецедентным нарушением международного права и посягательством на свободу и человеческие жизни со стороны режима Владимира Путина.
Мы выражаем солидарность народу Украины в его решимости распоряжаться своей судьбой и своим государством независимо от имперской власти и угнетения. Мы верим, что реакция организаций Чешской Республики в вопросе помощи Украине будет быстрой и адекватной, не в последнюю очередь потому, что существование и функционирование нашего государства во многом возможно благодаря упорному труду многих граждан Украины, которые не всегда имели здесь равные условия жизни и работы. В то же время мы поддерживаем граждан Российской Федерации, в том числе наших коллег, которые выражают свое несогласие с вооруженной агрессией и призывают положить ей конец.

26. ledna 2020 odešel Lukáš Radostný, kterého mnozí z nás znali, někteří spíše jako kolegu, jiní jako dobrého kamaráda. Lukáš byl antropolog a stál u počátků naší asociace, byť se v posledních letech vydal profesně spíše jiným směrem. Zřejmě jen málokdo z nás se stihl s Lukášem rozloučit, takže tak činíme alespoň takto: Lukáši, budeš nám chybět.

Dear President Erdoğan
Czech Association for Social Anthropology would like to express solidarity with our Turkish colleague Prof. Dr. Ayşe Gül Altınay who was sentenced to two years in prison for expressing her opinion. Prof. Altınay, as well as other Turkish academics, signed a petition ‘We will not be a party to this crime!’ that just reminded the Turkish state to follow both Turkish and international laws. This peaceful petition condemned the violent actions against the citizens living in the Kurdish provinces. We are convinced that signing similar peaceful petitions cannot be presented as a terrorist act and serve for sentencing anybody to prison.
Prof. Altınay is an internationally respected scholar who represents Turkish capacity to contribute to the advancement of social sciences and humanities not only in Turkey but also way beyond. She has contributed to Gender and Women’s Studies with her works on militarism, violence, and associated silences. She has been publishing with respected publishers and her works have been highly cited. Moreover, she has served as a member of the editorial board of the European Journal of Women’s Studies. There is no doubt that she is a kind of scholar that Turkey should use as its model of scholarly excellence.
The imprisonment of prof. Altınay was based on her alleged support of a terrorist organisation as a non-member. We are troubled by the fact that people can be sentenced for signing a public peaceful statement that puts emphasis on life in peace and justice. Our association stands in solidarity with prof. Altınay whose academic freedom to raise a critical voice was denied. We urge you to re-examine her case and dismiss the charges that violate basic standards of academic freedom.

Dear Mr. Minister,
As a president of the Czech Association for Social Anthropology I would like to express my deepest concern about the current institutional basis of Polish ethnology and anthropology. The members of our executive board including myself were very surprised when we learned that ethnology and anthropology disappeared from the list of officially recognized disciplines in Poland. Sometimes, there are discussions about classification of various disciplines and it is understandable that things can change over the years. These discussions and exercises in classification are usually associated with relationships of ethnology and anthropology to either humanities or social sciences or internal divisions within anthropology that may extend into biology and linguistics, especially in North America. It is an unprecedented decision, however, to drop ethnology or anthropology entirely from the list of official disciplines.
Polish ethnology and anthropology have a long tradition with considerable impact on the global academic community. One of the founding fathers, Bronisław Malinowski, became a central figure in the history of anthropology and ethnology. His texts are read across the globe and it is hard to imagine an introductory class for undergraduate students without references to Malinowski. Indeed, he was the person who defined the essential method of our research: participant observation. Perhaps, it is not perceived the same way in Poland but his name became a vehicle for the global promotion of Polish greatness comparable to Maria Skłodowska-Curie or Henryk Sienkiewicz. Denying the recognition of ethnology and anthropology as official disciplines simultaneously diminishes Polish contribution to the development of humanities and social sciences in general.
Of course, Malinowski is only a tip of the iceberg. Polish ethnologists and anthropologists have been a strong intellectual force in Central Europe over the decades. Many of Czech scholars have been collaborating with Polish colleagues. Michal Buchowski and Hana Červinková, to mention just two names, became highly visible figures within European social anthropology. The younger generation of Polish scholars have been pushing the limits of usual Central European publication strategies reaching the prestigious publishing houses and journals. Polish colleagues represent the core of our Visegrad Network organised around Max Planck Institute in Germany. This networking produced plans for the conference entitled Social and Cultural Consequences of Voluntary and Forced Migration in Europe, which will be held in Poznan in 2019. Also, Poznan will host another significant scholarly meetings within the frame of the International Union of Anthropological and Ethnological Sciences entitled Inter-Congress “World Solidarities” in 2019. In many respects, Polish colleagues represent an inspiration for our academic community.
One of the most powerful components of ethnology and anthropology is field research based on extensive presence of a researcher among the people that we study. This approach requires support and recognition. The denial of ethnology and anthropology as disciplines threatens researchers’ opportunity to do what they are good at. Without proper resources and recognition, these disciplines will be condemned to the position of “arm-chair studies” instead of the disciplines that can bring first-hand information about the life of migrants, ethnic minorities, strategies to face environmental changes, or various cultural incompatibilities that endanger the integrity of contemporary world.
I thereby urge you to reconsider the decision to drop ethnology and anthropology from the list of officially recognized disciplines. Czech Association for Social Anthropology strongly supports the protests of our Polish colleagues who call for maintaining ethnology and anthropology as officially recognized disciplines.

Jako profesní spolek sociálních antropologů a antropoložek a jedna z vědeckých společností Rady vědeckých společností ČR vyjadřujeme znepokojení nad případem prof. Davida Scheffela, který je od 10. listopadu 2017 držen ve vazbě na Slovensku. Profesor Scheffel patří k uznávaným oborníkům na romskou problematiku a byl zatčen v souvislosti s antropologickým výzkumem, který provádí v okolí Prešova.
Jsme si vědomi veřejného prohlášení prof. Scheffela (v angličtině) z května 2018, dostupného na https://www.justicefordavidscheffel.com/. O situaci se zajímá řada členů naší asociace, z nichž někteří jsou s prof. Scheffelem v přímém kontaktu.
Apelujeme, aby za všech okolností byla zaručena důstojnost zadrženého v souladu s národními i evropskými standardy.
Zdůrazňujeme, že podmínky vazby musí prof. Scheffelovi umožňovat přípravu účinné obhajoby včetně přístupu k vlastním výzkumným materiálům.
Připomínáme, že svoboda vědeckého výzkumu se vztahuje i na projekty věnované neformálním či nelegálním praktikám.

The Czech Association of Social Anthropology, a member of the Council of Scientific Societies of the Czech Republic, wishes to express concern about the case of Professor David Scheffel who has been remanded in custody in Slovakia since November 10, 2017. Professor Scheffel, a recognized expert in Romani studies, was arrested in connection with the anthropological field research that he had been conducting in the vicinity of the town of Prešov.
We are aware of the public statement that Professor Scheffel issued in May 2018 which is available at https://www.justicefordavidscheffel.com/. Several members of the Czech Association of Social Anthropology have been closely following Professor Scheffel’s case, and some have been in direct contact with him.
The Czech Association of Social Anthropology calls for the dignity of Professor Scheffel, as a detainee, to be respected under all circumstances and in compliance with national and European standards.
We emphasize that the conditions under which Professor Scheffel is held must be such so as to allow him to prepare an effective defense; and must include allowing Professor Scheffel to have full access to his own research material.
We call on all parties involved in this case to recognize that the freedom to pursue scientific research extends to projects that focus on informal and illegal practices.

Following the recent debates concerning the Act CCIV of 2011 on National Higher Education in Hungarian parliament, Czech Association for Social Anthropology expresses concern over the future of Central European University (CEU). The proposed amendments may threaten the future of the institution that represents the leading intellectual force in Central Europe and beyond. CEU has been a center of academic excellence and inspiration for more than two decades. We offer support to fellow anthropologists as well as the entire academic community at CEU. Also, we respectfully urge the Hungarian parliament and government to withdraw the proposed legislative changes to enable CEU to fulfill its academic mission.

V reakci na probíhající debaty, jež jsou spojeny s projednáváním opatření CCIV 2011 o změnách vysokoškolského vzdělávání v maďarském parlamentu, Česká asociace pro sociální antropologii vyjadřuje obavy nad budoucím vývojem a osudem Central European University (dále CEU). Navrhované dodatky ohrožují budoucnost instituce, která dlouhodobě platí za jedno z nejvýznamnějších intelektuálních prostředí ve střední Evropě i jinde. CEU je ohniskem akademických dovedností a inspirace po více než dvě dekády. Členové České asociace pro sociální antropologii vyjadřují podporu a ochotu pomoci nejen kolegům sociálním antropologům, ale také celému akademickému společenství na CEU. Zároveň vyzýváme maďarský parlament, vládu a všechny ostatní dotčené činitele, aby od připravovaných legislativních změn upustili, v opačném případě totiž zabrání CEU naplňovat své akademické cíle.

Igor Ševcov byl dlouhodobě držen ve vazbě v důsledku podezření ze spáchání závažného trestného činu, které mu nebylo prokázáno. Následně má být vyhoštěn za „účastenství ve formě pomoci… k přečinu poškození cizí věci“ do země svého původu, kde mu prokazatelně hrozí stíhání pro jeho přesvědčení. Vyzýváme proto ministra spravedlnosti Roberta Pelikána, aby zvážil možnost využít svého práva, jež mu umožňuje napadnout trest vyhoštění pro Igora Ševcova stížností.
Věříme, že Česká republika je hrdým pluralitním státem, který dokáže všem svým obyvatelům zajistit ochranu a důstojnost v souladu s mezinárodními závazky i českým právem a že výše uvedené nemusí a nemá být v rozporu.
